We want to help share their motivations, spread positivity throughout the community and inspire others to follow in their footsteps.
Today, we’d love to introduce you to one of our inspirational members… say hello to Vicky Turnbull.
Vicky is at one with nature and enjoys walking and cycling through the countryside with her friends – one of the many benefits of having the beautiful county of Northumberland on the doorstep! She’s passionate about travelling, trying new food and is currently learning Spanish for a trip to Mexico.
Read on to find out a little more about Vicky, why she joined The City Baths, why she thinks it’s a great place to achieve your wellbeing goals and her motivations for the rest of 2022.
What inspired you to focus on your health and wellbeing?
Being a woman in my 50s, although I was fairly active and ate pretty healthily, I had gained weight around my middle and felt uncomfortable in my clothes. I finally decided to do something about it and started doing the NHS Couch to 5K running programme back in early 2020.
I was looking for complementary activities to help my fitness journey, such as Pilates, yoga and swimming and spotted The City Baths had opened after many years. I booked a tour and was very impressed with the renovation (remembering how it looked back in the 80s!) and couldn’t wait to join.
A change of diet and exploring new avenues of fitness has paid off massively – I’ve lost an incredible two stone so far!
You are never too old to start… and The City Baths is a great place to do it!
What are your fitness motivations for 2022?
Having lost weight, I now want to focus on strength training by getting into the gym.
Weight training is really important for someone my age. It strengthens bones, tones your muscles and you are still burning fat if you’re training effectively.
What do you like about The City Baths?
It’s the perfect location – right in Newcastle city centre. I only have a 10-minute walk to get to the gym from my house which is great.
The facilities are amazing too. The clever integration of the fitness studio overlooking the gym allows for a lot of natural light. Everywhere is so clean and new and I love all the details like the tiles in the changing rooms and the original architectural features that have been preserved.
The staff are all great and very helpful. They will design a gym programme for you and show you how to use any equipment you are unsure of. The gym has all the latest equipment – Les Mills weights and TRX suspension bands in the Intencity room – there’s something for everyone!
Andre the Pilates teacher is fantastic, he explains which muscles we are working and why we do certain movements – he is very patient and motivates us to continue our Pilates journey.
From staff to members, there’s a real community feel of everyone helping each other and working together.
